Koushun Takami's notorious high-octane thriller is based on an irresistible premise: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing. Criticized as violent exploitation when first published in Japan-where it then proceeded to become a runaway bestseller- Battle Royale is a Lord of the Flies for the 21st century, a potent allegory of what it means to be young and (barely) alive in a dog-eat-dog world. Made into a controversial hit movie of the same name, Battle Royale is already a contemporary Japanese pulp classic, now available for the first time in the English language.

I have to begin by saying that this novel, hell this story can be viewed from two points of view. One: a reflection on the darker aspects of society. And secondly, a story about hope, trust, and faith. From the moment I picked this book up to the moment I closed the cover and put it back down (all of one day) I was captivated and held in thrall by the incredible story telling, the believable characters, and the incredible sense of reality that totally encompasses every last page of this book. Ok they may be a little over the top, but not by much. The setting alone caught my interest, a world controlled by such a level of fascism really frightened me, but more importantly the island, with its small microcosm of society featured by the 42 students really brought it all into brutal, paranoid, bloody, and sometimes faith filled reality for me. One thing that I loved was that each character, no matter how long, or short they lived, felt like a person to me. They weren’t just some body to add to the body count…ok maybe one or two.. But over all you had an idea of who the person was, and how they felt being shoved into this life or death situation. In this novel you can see the worst of society held side by side next those who by their sheer will manage to keep hope alive in this dreary world that fills the pages of this book. Another great thing is the way that you are kept guessing through out the entire story. Who’s telling the truth, who can you trust?, who will eventually turn on you and who will keep their word till the very end. I have not had the pleasure of reading a book this well written (and translated) in a very long time, and I have never read a book quite like this ever. I’m not saying that this book is a life changing experience or even a work that will change your views about some things in the world around you (even though they might, what do I know?) but I will say this, It will make you think and it will give you cause to pause and wonder.. What would you do.. If you found your self in… The Program.

As someone who never reads I thought this was an amazing book. Its sad at points and gory, and even if you don't like that it has a great story plot.

At first glance the cover art was awesome and I was skeptical for that reason. I read it and was like gosh this is good. I suggest this to anyone compulsed by Japan, Asia, or good reading. It's even better and makes more sense the second time through. - XryanXshieldsX

This captivating novel by Koushun Takami is amazing. As controversial as it may be, it is irresistible as the back cover says. A classic tale of friends becoming enemies, enemies becoming friends, and every man for himself. Follow the story of 42 High School students pitted against one another on a remote island that only one of them can come off of alive. This book may be captivating, but it's most defintely very graphic, and not for the weak at heart. Once you pick it up, you won't want to put it down. Buy this book. Now.

I personally enjoy novels/movies like BR but this was over the edge! I loved this book so much. Its in my nature to like the book better than its movie but seriously, I thought both were fantastic! The movie helps you visualize everything while the book explains and details everything more. You can't watch the movie with out reading the novel! I recommend this book because its the greatest book I've read. ^_^

If you loved the movie, you will love the book. I felt it was much more graphic than the motion picture, and in many ways even better. Some things made me change my mind though. In some parts they refer to the wrong characters, putting in the wrong name to whom the person is speaking to. So it doesnt make sense. Also they're a few spelling errors. This kind of made me feel it wasnt really "professional" making me give it a 4. Overall, a great read.
