The Demon Ororon tells the story of two beings that should have never met. It all starts out on a Rainy Monday when the strange and lonely angel/human halfbreed Chiaki and her friend stumble upon the gorgeous, sharply dressed, AWOL Demon King of Hell himself. The Demon King, Ororon, has been sitting against a wall, horribly injured for a good while, and Chiaki is the first one to actually ackowledge him. For this, he grants her one wish. Her wish? For him to stay with her forever. However, after that wish is made, it seems every force in the Universe is intent on not letting them be, including their personal philosophies. Heaven is after the head of a wretched half breed that shouldn't exist while the various monsters and demons of hell are after angel meat (which appears to be very tasty) and the bounty on the Demon King's head (placed by his own family). Don't be fooled by the simplistic art style and the almost cutesy opening, the characters and the plot grow complicating quite quickly. A Love story? Maybe. The impossible purity of Chiaki clashes with fact that she has fallen in love with an irreverent killer, who doesn't plan to change anytime soon. A story questioning morality? Is murder acceptable when it's an angel killing a being that shouldn't exist? If murder is wrong, then should one just roll over and die or defend himself? Or maybe it's a story illustrating the futillity of believing all obstacles are insurmountable? Can love truly overcome? Who knows? A mix of supernatural drama, angst, romance with touches of philosophy and dashes of humor rolled into a stylized package. Refreshingly atypical, and beatifully melancholy, I recommend the hell (no pun intended) out of this series. It's also nice to see a manga that ventures into the supernatural without having to make the men look like gothic drag queens. This series can be damn depressing, and there are some disturbing images, depending on your violence tolerance (bitten off fingers.. eyes being gouged out...) so don't read before you go to sleep. Two gripes I have is that the Tokyopop's editing job was so piss poor... a lot of typos. Secondly, there were some loose ends with the side characters (though I guess one could argue that the real story being told came to an absolute resolution). But There is a sequel to the series, so that's good. GO READ, NOW!
